Team America - Assessing The US Ryder Cup Team

he conclusion of the PGA Championship also finalized the 8 guaranteed spots on the US Ryder Cup team. So, let's analyze them!

Phil Mickelson
Appearances: 7
Record: 10-14-6
Intimidation factor (out of 5):  4 - Lefty has had a lack-luster year ever since his victory at Augusta. Also, anyone who smiles that much can't be scary. He's like the anti-Ben Hogan.
Coolness factor (out of 5): 3 - Phil isn't all that cool, but he has won 4 majors, and that' cooler than a lot of guys on this team.

Hunter Mahan
Appearances: 1
Record: 2-0-3
Intimidation factor: 4.5 - Streaky putter, but he can make tons of birdies
Coolness factor: 3.5 - He loses a full point for those sunglasses

Bubba Watson
Appearances: 0
Intimidation factor: 3 - Gains points for length, loses them for inexperience and being the nicest guy around
Coolness factor: 5 - Quickly becoming one of my favourite guys on tour

Jim Furyk
Appearances: 6
Record: 8-13-3
Intimidation factor: 4 - Great putter, doesn't make a lot of bogies
Coolness factor: 1 - This guy is super boring. But he gets a point because he's a tour player

Steve Stricker
Appearances: 1
Record: 0-2-1
Intimidation factor: 3 - Same as Furyk, only he's never won a match in the Ryder Cup, but pair him with Tiger like at the President's Cup and this could become a 5 quickly
Coolness factor: 3.5 - I like Strick, seems like a nice guy, but he wears those horrible reverse pleated pants

Dustin Johnson
Appearances: 0
Intimidation factor: 4 - Hits it a mile and he's won a couple tour events. Combine that with the experience he's gained in 2010 and the good karma that he's due after last week and he could be the team's point leader
Coolness factor: 4 - I'm not sure if his side burns add or deduct points, but the way he handled his unfortunate ruling this week was first class.

Jeff Overton (who?)
Appearances: 0
Intimidation factor: 0 - He's never won on tour. I don't really understand how the FedEx Cup awards points but somehow he's 6th. I'd be willing to bet that some players on the European team couldn't pick Overton out of a line-up
Coolness factor: 0

Matt Kuchar
Appearances: 0
Intimidation factor: 0.5 - At least he's won on tour... even though it was a 2nd (or 3rd) tier event. Also he won the US Amateur, but that was like 100 years ago.
Coolness factor: 0.5 - He's a bit cooler than Overton

So there you have it. This team is (so far) light on experience, intimidation and coolness... Even it's overall record isn't all that stellar. This means that Captain Corey (now without mustache) needs to make so seriously solid picks.

My picks:
Tiger Woods - He's "high" on Pavin's list. Well I sure hope he is. Even with his terrible season he's still the scariest guy to play against, especially when paired with Stricker. Also, he's currently tied with Overton and Kuchar for wins this season - zero. Not picking him and loosing would be a nightmare

Zach Johnson - He's certainly not my favourite player in the world, but he's a great putter and he has had a pretty good season, including strong play of late.

Stewart Cink - Not having the greatest year (that was 2009) but Cink brings experience, consistency and height.

Anthony Kim/Rickie Fowler/Freddy Couples - The spot is AK's to lose. If he can play well between now and September 7th (Pavin's drop dead date) he'll be on the squad. If he can't regain the form he had pre-injury I think Pavin goes in one of two directions. Youth: Rickie Fowler - he freewheels, he's friends with Bubba, he's got swagger. Experience - Freddy Couples - he hits it as far as ever, strong start to the season and decent form on the old guys' tour lately. Also, Freddy would significantly increase the coolness factor of this squad.
