Improve Flexibility Through Massage Therapy And Stretching In South Tampa 33629, Downtown Tampa, Macdill Afb And Hyde Park
Flexibility is natural in the young but you tend to lose it as you grow older and move less. You can continue to maintain and even improve your flexibility, though, through a combination of massage therapy and stretching. Stretching exercises can be done at home, in the gym or outdoors. Jen Bondeson wrote in an article in the Spring 2009 issue of Massage Envy Magazine that muscles do tighten and become less limber and less flexible as people age and become less active. Stretching exercises also improve blood circulation and, therefore, make way for faster healing and recovery from various illnesses while preventing other diseases.
Bondeson cites the recommendation of the the American Council on Exercise (ACE) that stretching exercises should be integrated into each fitness routine. This will increase a person’s range of motion and improve posture, allowing better movement while doing workouts or engaging in sports. Muscles become less prone to strain and injury. Proper stretching also prevents the build up of lactic acid and lessens soreness after workouts and sports events, allowing a person to do longer and more effective workouts and to perform better in sports.
The American Council on Exercise cautions that stretching exercises should be done in moderation, though. One should never hold a painful stretch because this could lead to muscle tearing. It is, therefore, important to first consult a doctor to have a professional evaluation of one’s joints. Consult a professional therapist, too, on the proper types of stretching exercises appropriate to your condition. This should be done no less than three times a week.
Fabio Comana, an exercise physiologist of the American Council on Exercise, advises that stretching exercises should always begin with a proper warm up because stretching cold muscles is not beneficial and will only have very temporary effects. To warm up the muscles you can try walking for five minutes, jogging or riding a bike. Any gentle activity that gets the blood flowing will do, too.
After the warm up, Comana says stretching exercises should still be started slowly. Stretch the muscles gently while exhaling and then hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds without holding your breath. Rhythmic breathing is most beneficial. Bouncing during a stretch should never be done since this automatically causes the muscles to contract, leading to injury. You will know that a stretch is done properly if you feel a pleasant tension. A stretch should never be painful. At the first sign of pain, the stretch should immediately but gently be released.
Bondeson says that like stretching, massage loosens, lengthens and relaxes tightened muscles and improves blood circulation. It also stimulates the production of lubricants in connective tissues, increasing range of motion and flushing away built up lactic acid. Like stretching, therefore, massage not only improves flexibility but also facilitates healing and recovery from illness and prevents the onset of diseases. In fact, stretching and massage work well together.
Make the most of the combination of massage therapy and stretching exercises in order to improve your flexibility and general health.
