Sun Peaks Alpine Blossom Season
While the Sun Peaks summit is beautiful when covered with glistening snow during the winter, there’s nothing like summer when it’s blanketed with stunning alpine flowers.
Alpine Blossom season occurs for a limited time during the summer on the upper reaches of Tod Mountain. The area is covered in an incredible spread of vibrant alpine flowers including Tiger Lilies, Fireweed and Indian Paintbrushes to name a few. This amazing floral exhibit is most beautiful during the warmer months of the summer, predominantly from late July to early August. Sun Peaks Summer Hiking
The alpine flowers are a must-see natural attraction in Sun Peaks. The beauty and brilliance of the floral displays are in full bloom for the short period of mid July until mid August. Hikers have the choice of uncovering the landscape by themselves or with a guided tour. The Sunburst Chairlift will give flower enthusiasts an easy boost up the mountain to a network of clearly-marked hiking trails winding down from the lifts providing easy accessibility to a number of different viewpoints.
For those who would prefer a guided tour of the alpine meadows area, the mountain offers a number of guided hiking tours for all fitness levels, including:
- Top of the World – You’ll definitely feel like you’re on top of the world when you inhale the breath-taking vistas from the summit of Sun Peaks. Venture into alpine meadows and marvel at the beautiful floral display. This hike is recommended for fit, intermediate hikers.
- Great Elevations – Admire the incredible scenery of the summer blossoms and surrounding valley from the top of Tod Mountain then cool off at Tod Lake. This hike is recommended for advanced hikers.
Alpine Flowers On Display
While trekking through alpine meadows, see if you can spot any of these floral beauties:
- Tiger Lilies – The vibrant-colour of this plant makes it easy to recognize on the mountain side. With its large orange petals with black spots, the Tiger Lily is said to resemble the fur of a tiger.
- Yarrow – The yarrow is an fragrant perennial plant that is well-known for it’s remedial and medicinal purposes. First Nations people used the roots to soothe toothaches and sore throats; it can also be used as a mosquito repellent when combined when burned.
- Prickly Rose – The prickly rose is recognized for it’s soft pink petals and spikey stem. Did you know that the rose hips of this plant are extremely high in vitamin C? One rose hip’s vitamin C content is equivalent to 15 oranges!
- Fireweed – This plant is known to be the first plant to grow after a forest fire (hence it’s name) and is often found in areas that are burned or have high vulnerability to fires. You can identify the Fireweed by its large clusters of mauve, rose or purple flowers.
