What are water spots that get on Stainless Steel? Will water spots get on SS from rain and regular sink water?

I'm referring to Stainless Steel jewelry. If I wear a SS necklace in the rain, will water spots get on it? If I rinse dirt of the necklace with water from the sink, will that water get spots on the necklace too? I don't know what water spots are and I don't know how they get on Stainless Steel.

Water spots are caused by the evaporation of the water droplets which leaves a ring of whatever impurities is in that water. Lime is probably the number one impurity in the water around where I live, you may have other things in your water. Rain water shouldn't water spot anything, as it is pure water, like distilled, only natural. If you rinse your necklace off in the sink, just be sure to towel it completely dry, that will keep the water from forming droplets, which is where the water spots start.
