Different Golf Clubs For Different Games

As with most sport, golf is a game that requires equipment such as golf clubs, golf balls and a variety of little golfing items, some for fun and some to play a better game. Golf clubs come in different styles depending on where you are on the course and how you wish to hit the ball. The different styles are golf woods, golf irons, golf putter and golf wedges. Golf wedges are actually part of the group of golf irons. Being a good golf player requires knowledge of the different types of golf clubs and when each one is needed.

A complete set of golf clubs will consist of the putter, the irons from 3-irons up to the 9-irons and possible a sand wedge. The different sizes of 3-iron, 4-iron, 5-iron, 6-iron, 7-iron, 8-iron and 9-iron are all used for a different circumstance such as overall distance or certain required height. Not all golfer uses all of these clubs, for instance, a woman may use an iron that is not well suited for a man because of the difference in their size and strength.

Each club will go a little further than the one smaller. The loft and the shaft length determine how far and high the ball travels. For instance, the 4-iron has more loft than the 3-iron as well as the 4-iron in the same way the 5-iron has more loft and a longer shaft length than a 4-iron. The most popular irons are the 5-iron and 7-irons.

The 7-iron is probably the more versatile of the two but the 5-iron is also versatile and comfortable to handle. Irons have thin clubheads that are made of metal and grooved faces. Irons are most often used when on the fairway or sooner if you are on a 3-par hole. The club head of the 5-iron is angled in a way that the golf player can get a lot of elevation on their shot as well as distance. For this reason, the 5-iron is used for shots requiring the ball to travel approximately 200 yards. Another feature of this universal club is that the perfect elevation and distance make for a very accurate shot.

Another circumstance where the 5-iron comes in handy is when you're in the rough (tall weeds, etc) and need to get back on the fairway. It may not get you exactly where you want to be in one shot, but it will get you in the right direction. This is, of course, provided you are not in real tall grass. If this is the case, you may need a chipping wedge to gently chip it out of the grass. Just make sure you bring both if going on a golf package to Spain.

The 5-iron is also known for being a perfectly sized and comfortable iron for everyone that uses it. It's combination of speed, elevation, distance and accuracy make it most golfers' favorite iron. The length is perfect for most golfers making it one of the most easy to control golf clubs. One of the worst things that can happen on the golf course is when your club turns just before it strikes the ball. This seldom happens with a 5-iron.

Picking between sports, golf or baseball?

I have played both forever, golf since I was 3 an baseball since I was 8, I'm 15 now and have decided I need to try to specialize in one of these sports (since the seasons are pretty much at the same time. In golf I'm about a 7 handicap and played quite well in the Alberta junior last year making the cut and finishing in a good spot, (considering I'm only 15) I enjoy baseball too (not as much as golf) and I am a pretty good pitcher for my team last year, what sport should I choose?

I am a Golf Pro and agree with Yi Yi on this. Seems to me you are swaying towards Golf.

My advice would be to chose one and one only if you are thinking of a serious future in either. Sounds like you are a better golfer than a baseballer?

To be really good at any sport you need to devote yourself to it and love what you do with a passion. At 15 and playing off 7 handicap you still have a chance to become very good.

Get a coach and go for it .... you are only 15 but the years slide by pretty fast so commit yourself and put in the hard work and you never know, your dreams may come true.

It also seems to me you have a natural ability for ball sports just like i have, which helps a lot. I turned pro when i was 18 and have been a Golf Pro for over 33 years.

Natural ability can take you only so far. The rest is up to you to work hard and i am sure if you do that you will succeed.
