Emirates, the official airline and partner of the 2010 Ryder Cup, is to become the Official Sponsor of European Team Captain Colin Montgomerie.

The announcement was made on the eve of the of the BMW International Open in Munich, marking 100 days until the start of the 2010 Ryder Cup in October on the Twenty Ten Course at Celtic Manor in Wales. Montgomerie, who has played in five winning Ryder Cup Teams, is currently playing in Munich as he prepares for his role as European Captain later this year. The 2010 Ryder Cup is one of the most eagerly anticipated sporting events of the year, and will attract more than 200,000 golf fans to the UK and the City of Newport in Wales, as well as a global television audience of millions. The multi-award winning carrier also extends its support for golf by allowing passengers to check in a set of golf clubs free of charge, in addition to their normal checked baggage allowance, in any class of service on all Emirates flights. The airline currently serves 23 European destinations and will soon add Prague and Madrid to its network. The airline will be connecting passengers to the 2010 tournament, as well as the 2012 event in Illinois, with San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston and New York also on the Emirates network. Along with The Ryder Cup and BMW International Open, Emirates will be the Official Airline at 13 other tournaments in 2010, with nine of them on The European Tour International Schedule.

Wales has been warned the 2010 Ryder Cup could be the only time the nation hosts golf's showpiece tournament.

The Celtic Manor will stage October's event between Colin Montgomerie's Europe and United States as the Ryder Cup comes to Wales for the first time. Jim McKenzie, Celtic Manor's director of golf courses, has told the Welsh to enjoy this "one-off" as golfing chiefs should share the Ryder Cup around."I believe this will be a one-off opportunity," said McKenzie. Wales beat Gleneagles in Scotland for the right to host this Ryder Cup after the first tender process to stage the tournament - but the Perthshire course was chosen as the 2014 host course. McKenzie insists Wales' bid won because their team convinced the European Tour that the golfing, economic and tourism boost the Ryder Cup would be greater for Wales. Now McKenzie thinks future Ryder Cups in Europe should be shared around the continent to spread the word of golf and boost inward investment. Only two of the 18 Ryder Cups hosted by Europe have been outside of the United Kingdom - 1997 in Spain and 2006 in Ireland - but the 2018 spectacle will be on the continent as the six bidders are France, Germany, Holland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

Ryder Cup concert stars revealed

Catherine Zeta Jones will swap Hollywood for her native Wales to tee off a massive star-studded Ryder Cup celebration concert. Jones, who was honored with a CBE earlier this month in the Queen's Birthday Honors, will open the extravaganza at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. Katherine Jenkins will also perform at the televised Welcome to Wales's concert on September 29.The Welsh classical singer, wearing a pair of skyscraper platform heels, put some practice into her swing outside the stadium today. The 90 minute show will mark the start of the golfing tournament, which is held in the country this autumn. The European and United States teams will also be on stage on the night, to be introduced to the audience. Jenkins said: "I'm delighted to be back in Wales for this very special concert to mark the launch of this landmark event.

"To welcome the most prestigious and recognized event in the golfing calendar to Wales is a real honor. "I don't think Wales has ever seen anything on this scale so it's very exciting to be part of it." Cardiff-based Last Choir Standing and Classical Brit winners Only Men Aloud will also perform at the gig. The 2010 Ryder Cup will be held at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, south Wales, between October 1 and 3.

Do you think that Tiger Woods deserves to be on the US Ryder Cup team?

It seems that no matter what Tiger Woods does....he still benefits. It seems to me that there have been many more golfers this year that have shown their golf prowess that actually deserve to have been picked for the US Ryder Cup Team. Why would Cory Pavin pick someone of such laughable character, not to mention year long poor golfing performance?

Picking Tiger was the economic decision. He hasn't done nearly enough this year to warrant a pick. Matt Kuchar did. Tiger being #1 still only proves one thing- the "world golf rankings" are convoluted and meaningless. Tiger's experience includes a 10-13-2 record (plus many instances of having looks in his eyes that seemed to say "I REALLY don't want to be here".

I honestly think Fowler was the smartest choice of the four... a 7-1 Walker Cup record says it all. He could be this year's Anthony Kim. Woods has one RC victory, Cink has none. What "experience" would they bring?

As I said earlier, it was the economical pick. The Golf Channel estimated revenues for the event with Tiger in it would be ~$10 million. Everyone involved said "Cha-Ching", making the decision pretty easy. It's a shame. Tiger may be the "best", but he isn't this year. There were other, more deserving picks that should've went, if integrity was what people were after.
