Traditional Look and Feel in Ping i15 Driver review
The i15 driver is a good looking driver. While the sometimes controversial "half moon alignment aid lives on, it is a smaller, more subdued version of the one found on the earlier G-series models. I can live with it just fine, and I sure do dig the dark menacing look of this driver.
PING states that the i15 is for the player seeking "traditional look and feel" in a driver. Sitting on the rack in the golf shop, the i15 doesn't exactly scream traditional look, and a few hits in the cage will confirm that the i15 does not feel all that much like persimmon, either. Clearly, traditional has more to do with the pear-shape of the i15 than its size. It would be true to say that the i15 driver looks slightly more "traditional" than the G-15 and most other drivers on the market today.
The i15 driver has a hotter sweet spot by a few yards although it is not as lively across the entire face as the G15 driver. This way the better golfer gets more feedback in his hands when he does not strike the ball dead center, which tells him how and where he is striking the club face more easily. Where with the G15 you could not be striking the ball as well but still feel as though you had struck pay dirt on the face. With the i15 driver you know exactly where on the face it was struck by the feel and ball flight pattern. And this is the main reason why every single digit handicapper we tested thought it was the better driver in their opinion.
In terms of forgiveness, I found the i15 driver to do a good job on my off center hits. Is it the most forgiving driver on the market, no. But the caliber of golfer the i15 is designed for will be just fine. If you need a more forgiving driver, Ping has other models like the G15 or Rapture V2 that can help.
Overall, I was really impressed with the Ping i15 driver and how easy it is to produce medium-high trajectory drives that went long and straight. The i15 driver is a great club for a player who wants workability and distance off the tee.

In the last 20 years the PGA driving avg?
Has increased about 27yards..but every year there is a company that claims u can get 20 more yards with this shaft or driver head..So..Ive been paying since 91, and I was hitting persimmon woods 300yd, If i went by their claims and bought a $500 driver every year shouldn't i be hitting it 700yds..Why do most golfer fall for this obvious false advertising and run to the golf store every February?
Because they're always looking for that "magical" answer to their golfing woes. Bobby Jones way back in the 20's and 30's was hitting 300 yard drives with wooden heads and hickory shafts... Jack Nicklaus hit a 343 yard drive with a wooden head, 125g steel shaft and leather grip (it was 43"). Loft and swing speed are the only important factors in determining distance (a lighter weight can be swung faster by some, which is where that fits in) it doesn't matter when it was made or how much it cost. Spending more and getting the same results just makes a person look stupid.
Golf is the only sport where the equipment makers, for all intents and purposes, own it. You don't go out and buy a $300 baseball mitt because they tell you you'll become Albert Pujols. You don't buy the $200 Kobe Bryant shoes because they'll make you suddenly dunk a basketball like him. You don't buy the most expensive carbon-fiber hockey stick under the assumption you'll suddenly become Wayne Gretzky.
So why do people feel that buying what they pro's play will do it for them? That "play what the pro's play" thing is a joke, anyway... they never offered Tiger and Anthony Kim's 380cc DyMo (the retail was 460cc), they don't offer any of Phil Mickelson's Frankentstein putters (or the hybrid he gamed the last couple of years). The shafts and grips they play are the same as what we can buy, except for the prototypes that don't make it to the production phase.
Golf media is also in on this. Advertising dollars drive the market. A person can't do an unbiased "review" for fear of having those ad dollars pulled (which has been the case in the past, according to Geoff Shackelford). So, what you get is regurgitated marketing crap and people's opinions... and we all know what opinions are akin to. How is that "fair and unbiased" journalism? Where's the integrity?
Speaking of integrity, it's a laughable notion when it comes to golf equipment. OEMs are more interested in padding their stockholder's bottom lines, not giving us any true "help". That's why there's so much product turnover. That's why a company will release an eff-tee Tour, then an acronym-looking named (sounds like "razor") with the only differences being cosmetic (the "backweight" and color-inflected carbon). They don't put their race-car inspired technology against similar models from their past, but only to titanium-crowned drivers. It's pathetic. It's also why another company will release 4 different models based on the same platform, with only "tweaks" being the difference. A 430cc head with the trimmings, a 460cc model with movable weights missing, a 460cc model with the trimmings and a new paint scheme, and a similar paint-schemed model with a deep face? Why couldn't this have been done from the beginning? To get the sheep to spend their money, that's why.
Read any material from reputable club fitters. Not a one will tell you to buy the most expensive or current "it" model of head, shaft, or grip. The really good fitters will eliminate that variable from the get-go, to avoid embarrasment for both the fitter and customer. There are three different shaft reviews, each one says the same thing: if a shaft has the same specs, they'll play the same regardless of price. Yest, just as people are lemmings to club brands, they're lemmings to shafts (it's starting to get that way with grips... those super-expesive Iomics are drawing a crowd, for some reason). "The shaft is the engine of the club"... bulls#it. If it is, how is the club set into motion? Does the shaft do it by itself? The shaft's important, but not nearly as important as the head, grip, total weight, swing weight, etc.
So, I got there the long way, but here it is: most golfers are lemmings. They see what Tiger's playing and run to the nearest Golf Galaxy. They see ads everywhere they go and run to the golf store... if it's in an ad, it HAS to be good, right? LOL... The OEMs know this, which is why products are constantly being released. Until that mentality stops (doubtful) don't expect anything different.
