The Claddagh ring depicts two hands surrounding one crowned heart, which is a symbol of loyalty, friendship and love. Each symbol in its design depicts a different aspect of love – the hands mean friendship, the crown represents loyalty and the heart means love. First created over 300 years ago in the tiny Irish fishing village of Claddagh, these men's sterling silver rings are believed to be one of the best ways to bring good luck and happiness to a marriage.
In addition to the good fortune they bring, Claddagh rings can also be used to convey the wearer's romantic "status". When worn on the right hand with the heart facing outward, it means the wearer's heart is "open" and they are not in a romantic relationship. When worn on the right hand with the heart facing inward, the wearer's heart has been "captured". As a relationship gets more serious, the Claddagh ring is moved to the left ring finger. On the left hand, the heart facing outward means the wearer is engaged, and an inward-facing heart means they are married.
