Local San Francisco Golf Course Offerings
Because it is situated on a peninsula where real estate is at a premium, San Francisco could not expand horizontally like most cities; it has had to expand vertically, hence its abundance of tall buildings and dearth of open spaces. Despite this, there are no fewer than nine local San Francisco golf course offerings within a six-mile radius of the city center. Best of all, most of them are public San Francisco golf courses, though exclusive private golf clubs such as Presidio and President's Cup are available for those who prefer such institutions and can afford them.
Advantages of Public San Francisco Golf Courses
The primary advantage of public golf courses: Bay Area golfers don't have to pay for them when they're not playing. You simply sign up for a time and pay your greens fees for the time you are actually playing. Those fees are usually much lower as well, and in some cases, it is possible to play for free on such golf courses. Bay Area golfers speak very highly of these facilities. When it comes to public golf courses, San Francisco golf aficionados who play only occasionally, or are just getting started in the game, may be better served.
Private Golf Courses
San Francisco golfers who are out there every day or are looking for addition services and facilities such as an on-site pro shop, tennis, swimming, restaurant and even hosting may prefer one of the areas private golf courses. San Francisco private golf facilities include one of the last remnants of old Victorian San Francisco before the Great Earthquake of 1906. Presidio, which is one of the three oldest golf courses west of the Mississippi river, was built at the behest and with the money of several San Francisco businessmen in 1895; the Tudor-Style clubhouse, built two years later, is still in use. It is possibly the most popular private San Francisco golf course, but is quite exclusive; new members must be sponsored by two current members in good standing. However, new members who are under the age of 40 at the time of their acceptance and initiation may elect to hold a "Young Executives' Membership" and enjoy a 50% discount on dues until they reach that age.
Golf Tee Times
Bay Area tee times are something to keep in mind, as this often affects the cost of play. It's a simple function of supply and demand, of course; for some golf tee times, Bay Area golfers show up in droves, while at other times, the course is virtually empty. Obviously, the latter times are when you'll enjoy the most attractive golf specials; San Francisco Bay Area courses are always cheaper when there is less of a crowd.
Choices in Golf Courses
San Francisco is not all there is for the golfer living in that city. Although one may prefer a San Francisco golf course nearby, those who are willing to travel to nearby communities in the Bay Area will find a world of excellent play beyond the San Francisco golf course.

Who is the best golf instructor in the San Fernando Valley area?
Looking for someone local at a public facility. I've tried a few at Sepulveda, Van Nuys, Woodley, Knollwood, and Lindero. Haven't clicked with anyone yet. I'm about a 25 handicap, 40 yrs old, good shape, and I work hard at my game. I should be better!!
I am looking for a good instructor myself, I live in the San Gabriel Valley, I heard about an instructer at Debeer golf course in Burbank thats pretty good, I havent tried him yet, There are a couple of guys at Alhambra Golf Course in Alhambra that are pretty good but I havent had a lesson with them yet, I only watched them for a couple of mins and they seemed really good, My suggestion would be to go, not call, the course and ask the pro at the golf shop if he knows of anybody that he could recommend to you. My suggestion is ask them if they have or know of anybody thats around your same height and build that they could recommend to you. Somebody around your height and build would be better for you cause they are more in contact with your body frame. If your serious about getting better like I am then dont just limit yourself to one geographical area go as far as your willing to drive because you will gain more out of it in the long run. A guy in my apartment complex told me that at the Rose Bowl they have a group class that is very good on saturdays and he has been taking the class for a while know and he likes it. Ask random people that play if they have had lessons and if they would recommend them to you, ask how there experience was. Another thing is go to different driving ranges that offer lessons grab a large bucket of balls, go when it would be a lesson day, usually on the weekends, and see if you get lucky and see a guy giving lessons to somebody and observe how they do and if you think they will benefit you. Its like watching a lesson for free, ok well under $10 for the bucket of balls. If you want you can contact me and I can give you the names of the guys from alhambra that I have. As for teacher ask if they use video and training aids.
One more thing there are alot of good books and DVDs out on the market that will help, but nothing like a instructer.

As for what you said about being better. I have a saying that I modified from watching golf on TV, you might hear them talking about a "Risk and Reward" zone. Well I changed that saying into my saying when I play its called "Stupid and Smart" zone. And what that is play your shots to the smart zone which is where you have a better chance of the next shot being good not bad. Good Luck to you and maybe we can Tee it Up sometime.
