Step Off The Beaten Path In These Golf Shoes

Shoes made by FootJoy, Nike, adidas and ECCO get buckets of ink from the golf media. That's why they spend big bucks to lure tour pros to their products.

Other brands have less invested in golf shoes, which constitute a small portion of their portfolios. Footwear for golfers may be something of an afterthought for these outfits, but that doesn't mean you should overlook them.

Swedish sports-fashion trendsetter J. Lindeberg and sunglass stalwart Oakley are among those making quality golf shoes with little or no fanfare. Likewise, athletic-shoe giants Asics and Puma offer spike-bottomed alternatives to their better-known competitors.

Here's a look at each company's golf footwear:

J. Lindeberg

Since 1997, Stockholm-based J. Lindeberg has targeted fashion-conscious golfers and skiers with apparel it terms "elegant but not traditional... bohemian but not carefree... arty but not snobbish." The JL Golf Brogue and JL Golf Bridge lines are undeniably stylish... but not multi-chromatic. Combinations of black and white are all J. Lindeberg offers, which is perfectly fine for purists and hipsters alike.

Oakley

You'd expect cool shoes from a shades company, and cool is literally what you get with Oakley's Superdrive model and its moisture-wicking liners. Waterproof leather and a form-fitting footbed add comfort, but it's the cool quotient – boosted by brand ambassador Ricky Barnes' resurgence – that makes Oakley a player.

Asics

The most recent entrant into the golf footrace, Asics brings a reputation for building super-comfortable shoes for runners and other "real" athletes. Its Gelace Top golf shoes, says the company, are "designed to reduce fatigue through extreme stability." Hey, if Asics can do that for pavement pounders, keeping golfers' feet fresh must be a snap.

Puma

Thanks to cover boy Rickie Fowler, Puma has gained some traction with its Cell Fusion golf shoes. It takes a young stud like Fowler to pull these off in the white-snorkel blue combo, or even the black-white with red accents, but they sure are comfy. Puma's iCell insert supplies cushioning in the heel and forefoot, while the SmartQuill spike system promises great stability.

93-97 geo metros........35 city with auto...40 with manual.....as much as 50 hwy....
