Brush Up Etiquettes At Private Golf Courses
Golf is famous as the game that epitomizes a fine balance between competition, skill, integrity and respect for other players. This is corroborated by the fact that in golf, players act as their own referee and are responsible for enforcing the rules themselves. American professional golfer Lew Worsham upheld this spirit of golf when in the 1948 Jacksonville Open Championship held at Jacksonville Country Club by calling a penalty against himself, which no one else had seen. Apart from expecting the players to show honesty and reliability, golf etiquettes ensures their safety and make the game an enjoyable experience for all. We take a brief look at the basic golf etiquettes followed by the private golf courses.
• Golf etiquettes begin even before one reaches the private golf course. The first rule is to reserve the tee times. It is recommended to book tee times few days before the date one wants to play. If you are thinking about playing a popular private golf course during the peak season, book tee times 15 days or 1 month in advance.
• It is recommended to reach the private golf course at least 45 minutes – 1 hour before the game begins. This will ensure that the mind remains fresh, relaxed and one can concentrate fully on the game. Before the tee times begin, opt for some light stretching exercises. Most private golf clubs provide practice facilities. Sharpen golfing skills at the driving range or practice putting on the green.
• To maintain golf etiquettes at private golf clubs, one needs to dress properly. Remember that every private golf course follows different dress codes. Therefore, it is important to contact the private golf club beforehand and inquire about the dress codes. In general, a colored shirt along with Dockers-style shorts or slacks, along with golf shoes are allowed by most private golf clubs. Golf is a conservative game and most private golf courses maintain the rule of no denims, sweat pants or tank tops.
• On subsequent tees, the rule is that the golfer who has the best score on the last hole tees off first. However, there are many private golf courses which, in order to avoid slow play, allow golfers to opt for ready play. This means that anyone who is ready to hit the ball can go first, notwithstanding his/her score. However, it is important to ensure that everyone who is teeing off at the private golf course agrees to this ‘ready golf' (as it is popularly known).
• Ensure that one is staying out the golfer's line of sight when he/ she is striking the ball. This means standing next to the golfer and not in front or behind the person.
• Once one is finished with the game at the private golf course, repair the pitch marks or ball marks on the green. Repair the divots as well. Many private golf courses provide a bucket of sand for repairing the divots.
Golf etiquette rules, as discussed above, are of various types. However, the basic rule is to be responsible for one's actions and appreciate the fact that there are other players on the golf course. Follow the etiquettes and have fun while relishing a good round of golf.
