Technically, what you are asking about is called a "mark." Marks come in many types.
1) Logotype (where the misnomer 'logo' actually comes from): the organization name rendered in a distinct typographic way (NOT just using computer type fonts) Example: Coca-Cola script.
2) Monogram: the initials of the organization rendered in a distinct manner. Example: IBM, 3M.
3) Symbol: an abstract image which MAY derive from the organization's area of competence but usually has no intrinsic meaning in and of itself. Example: the Nike swoosh.
4) Glyph: a stylized image that demonstrates the organization's area of competence. Example: the wool mark (it looks like a skein of wool).
5) Alphaglyph: a combination of typography and a stylized image that demonstrates the organization's area of competence. Example: the cotton mark (it combines the word cotton with the image of a cotton boll).
What images do you think of when you hear about your club? Let's say it's a chess club. High contrast images (hard edged black-and-white) tend to work better for logos. Fine gradations of color and shading generally don't work well and can be costly to reproduce.
Try to find some inspiration online (notice I did NOT say "steal a logo") but there is nothing new under the sun, only new combinations. Look at some other logos and be inspired.
