Charity Challenges – The British Way To Outdoor Sports And Camaraderie

Having moved from Finland to UK, the world of charity sports was totally alien concept to me. Having now lived in the UK for over 10 years, I think that charity challenges are one of the great British traditions, something that every expatriate should take part as soon as they can. Not only do you get to know English countryside better, you also get a chance to make some great friends. You also need to raise funds to donate to the charity in order to take part in the sports challenge, and this gives you a great opportunity to get involved in your local community and hone in your networking and business skills.

There are plenty of organisers and events to choose from. Some charity events are open for you to support any charity, such as London Marathon, i.e. you choose which charity to donate to. Others are dedicated to supporting a particular charity. And there are over 150,000 registered charities in the UK.

So how do you choose your charity challenge, or the charity to support? If you feel strongly about a particular cause, such as cancer, then look for specific events in support of MacMillan Cancer Support or Cancer Research UK.

If you are sports enthusiast, then you can look for a charity that is affiliated with a particular sport. For example, Wooden Spoon is the charity associated with rugby. There are several charities associated with football. The advantage of the sport association is that you are likely to find like-minded people. Just remember the English saying – "football is gentlemen's game watched by thugs, rugby is thugs' game watched by gentlemen."  

So how can you get involved? If the charity challenge is for a team, it is quite common for colleagues in the workplace to form a team. So ask around if anyone has taken part in the past or would like to take part. You can also contact the local regional branch of the charity.

My son is 3 and half yrs old and i want him to introduce to any sports or art class.please suggest.?

He is very active but nowadays addicted to Ben10 and imitating all the aliens..If we could make him engaged in any of such sports/art activities he will be distracted from the TV/PC.

3.5 is pretty young for a structured art class or sports. Though you could enroll him in a 2 day a week (or more) preschool program. That will help "round out" his education and keep him engaged.

If he's at home with you...you just need to remember that you are the parent and you can shut off the TV or PC. No offense meant there...just wanted to confirm that it IS your right.

If you are at home with him... but can't afford to send him to a preschool program...you could do a little "teaching" on your own. Provide experiences for him to work with. Sensory is great fun and has a lot of benefits. I use a wading pool with plastic dish tubs. I use sand, beans, corn (taking the corn kernals off of the cobs is very fun...I use the "squirrel" corn from the grocery store), gak, etc. Provide bowls, containers, and other tools for exploration. Water is a great benefit as well. You can just push a chair up to the kitchen sink.

What about offering him art experiences yourself? Cover your table and or floor, if you are concerned about messes.

There are many ways to paint... with brushes, with homemade brushes, finger painting, painting with "squishers" (margarine lids), painting on construction paper, fingerpaint paper, corrugated cardboard, textured paper, etc.

You can provide playdough (have him help you make it) or clay...great for fine motor.

Get out the scissors and have him practice cutting. If he does a bunch of "free cutting" then have him eventually glue it onto a shape to make a collage. Foam is a really nice media for this age and it's colorful. It looks really nice on a black piece of posterboard.

Provide lots of writing tools to explore with and different types of writing surfaces...markers, colored pencils, chunky crayons, regular crayons, chalk, watercolor pencils, etc.

Play games with him- make your own games; play memory, mancala, candyland, Don't Break the Ice, etc.

Maybe he's heading to the TV or computer because he's bored. Consider how his toys are. Most of the time I see toys everywhere or in a toy box. This isn't organized and they usually don't even know what they have. I recommend purchasing a toy shelf. I got ours at Target. I label containers with what's inside and I put the same label on the shelf where it goes. Makes it easy clean up as well. Also, I rotate no less than every 2 weeks. That way there isn't a lot of toys out at a time and then they seem "new" frequently.
